George English
EAST RIDING FA UNSUNG HERO OF THE MONTH – MARCH 2025
The East Riding FA Unsung Hero of the Month award recognizes individuals in our county who are going above and beyond to create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for people to play and enjoy football.
We know that grassroots football in our county is supported by an amazing group of people who put their heart and soul into supporting the game for the benefit of others. This award is our way of recognizing and celebrating their efforts.
The winner of this month’s award is George English.
Despite being aged just 17 years old George is already making a significant contribution to refereeing in East Riding.
George qualified as a referee in 2022 aged just 15 years old with him being one of the standout candidates to qualify from the FA Basic Referee Course.
Since then, George has excelled in his role as a match official with him embracing the responsibility he now commands. He is a calm and authoritative figure and displays empathy and integrity when taking control of games.
With the support of the East Riding FA Centre of Refereeing Excellence George has graduated from refereeing Youth Football with him now being appointed to adult Saturday and Sunday fixtures as well.
George takes on board advice and is always looking to better himself which is reflected in his nomination to be part of the FA’s national Centre of Refereeing Excellence (CORE).
And now after only two years of being in the middle George has already been promoted to being a Level 6 Referee with him also set to be involved in the end of season County Cup Finals.
Clubs and Participation Officer Chris Johnson said, “George is a fantastic inspiration to young people who may be thinking of becoming a referee. He has displayed all the values and principles that are associated with the DNA of English Refereeing and has shown tremendous dedication to a role that can sometimes be challenging.”
George will now be nominated for an award at the 2025 Grassroots Football Awards.
