Crystal Hindhaugh Ness
EAST RIDING FA UNSUNG HERO OF THE MONTH – JANUARY 2025
The East Riding FA Unsung Hero of the Month award recognizes individuals in our county who are going above and beyond to create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for people to play and enjoy football.
We know that grassroots football in our county is supported by an amazing group of people who put their heart and soul into supporting the game for the benefit of others. This award is our way of recognizing and celebrating their efforts.
The winner of this month’s award is Crystal Hindhaugh Ness.
Crystal is the coach at Cottingham Rangers U8 Diamonds and stepped up to volunteer her time when the teams original coach stepped away from the side.
Despite having no previous experience of coaching or playing football Crystal took on the responsibility so that the team didn’t fold, and so that her daughter could carry on playing with her friends.
Her lack of knowledge though hasn’t fazed Crystal though and she has devoted her spare time to researching and finding sessions and games so that training is fun and varied. Crystal prioritises the needs of each player often above her own and understands that each child has their own unique traits and challenges.
Crystal’s ability to craft unique and engaging training sessions means that the players always have a smile on their face even when they have found fixtures challenging. Crystal though is able to continue motivating the players with her constant enthusiasm and positivity meaning that the girls are able to develop their confidence and skills.
Crystals determination to provide the best possible experience for her team though doesn’t just stop on the pitch.
When the team was in danger of folding due to a lack of players Crystal produced leaflets and flyers so that the girls could share these with the classmates and friends. When players are ill Crystal gets the rest of the team together to make get well videos and to help bring the team together Crystal provides matching nail varnish so that all the girls are united.
It’s clear that Cottingham Rangers U8 Diamonds is more than just a football team and Crystal is pivotal to this. The players can express themselves in a safe and inclusive space with Crystal herself commenting that she gets just as much pleasure out of training and matchdays as the girls do.
Clubs and Participation Officer Chris Johnson said, “Crystal has taken on a huge challenge, but she has demonstrated that with enthusiasm and determination that coaching a team isn’t as daunting as people may think. If you are fortunate enough to attend any of Crystals training sessions, you will clearly see that there is a great bond between her and the players and that is down to her positivity and empathy.”
Participation (Inclusion) Officer Rebecca Bolton added “Crystal is a real inspiration and we hope that more women take on the challenge of coaching their sons or daughters grassroots football teams”
Crystal will now be nominated for an award at the 2025 Grassroots Football Awards.
