EAST RIDING FA UNSUNG HERO OF THE MONTH – OCTOBER 2024

The East Riding FA Unsung Hero of the Month award recognizes individuals in our county who are going above and beyond to create a fun, safe, and inclusive environment for people to play and enjoy football.

We know that grassroots football in our county is supported by an amazing group of people who put their heart and soul into supporting the game for the benefit of others. This award is our way of recognizing and celebrating their efforts.

The winner of this month’s award is Ruth Watkins.

The nomination for Ruth described how she work’s tirelessly as Club Secretary at newly formed Long Riston AFC and how she works for the benefit of others with her always putting the needs of others before her own.

Ruth shows tremendous dedication to her role as club secretary and indeed also finds time to coach the clubs U10’s Wolves side. She is recognised for her fairness, honesty and integrity and for her organisational skills which has ultimately led to the club being able to establish itself so quickly.

Through her coaching Ruth has managed to inspire both boys and girls to play in the same team with her impressing upon the players the need to play with respect. She also implements equal game time and always welcomes players of all ability levels.

This has of course been achieved whilst Ruth and other members of the club worked extremely hard to source new playing facility, new kits, new sponsors whilst taking on new administrative duties.

East Riding FA Communications and Participation Officer Chris Johnson said, “Ruth has responded to many challenges robustly and has done so with great integrity. She is a great example of a volunteer who puts the needs of others rather than her own and she is an integral part of Long Riston AFC.”

Ruth will now be nominated for an award at the 2025 Grassroots Football Awards.
